Organizational Values:  Employee Motivation and Commitment at Workplace



Mr. Shoukat Ali Abbasi is a HR professional with professional work experience of almost 8 Years in HR & OD in complex and multi culture environment in different organizations across the country.  Mr. Shoukat Ali has been a lead Trainer for various sectors like; corporate sector, social sector, and public sector. His area of interest are Organizational Psychology, Organizational Behavior, Employee Relations, and Organizational Development. He is currently working as Deputy Registrar-HRM with Sukkur IBA University, Sukkur, Pakistan. 



In the modern organizations, values are considered fundamental elements for motivated workforce. These work values regardless of much relevancy to one’s job have in large influence on employee’s job performance. Work values are the subset of your beliefs and ideas that are related to your occupation or job. These core principle are an important part of how do you work. In value oriented organization, they include things like honesty, self-respect, respect for others and positivism. Your work place values are the guiding principles that are most important about the way that you work, therefore, employee tend to consider it important for working and long term retention with current organization or they as result of absence of rational values, tend to start search another value fit organization.

The respect for customer, senior, coworkers, and other stakeholders of organization is considered important work value in organization. Every employee in general seeks to be treated respectfully, he/she is equally valued with dignity and respect. The respect at work places comes when one listens to other carefully, provides feedback on problem, and issues, and treat with empathy- to understand one’s feeling at the moment. Such empathy encourages self-respect at all. For example, transparency is to have access to all relevant information and such value in modern and diversified organization have played a vital role. The administrative role of manger become easier when concept of fairness exists in fundamental values of organization. The frequency of affirmative action against adverse condition is another factor of renowned and alter management which always promotes work values.

Values forms culture and culture develops working conditions working conditions are another motivators. The number of employees leave organization due to hazardous, and adverse working conditions. Such conditions may include disrespect, dishonesty, favoritism, and dis trust. They all one and other way lead to disassociation among employees who work honestly and professionally. It is highly regarded to put value in outer and hire based on value which will surely create value fit between employees and organization. This value fit shall create promote culture needed to achieve the plans in organization.

The culture of organization is reflective mirror for any employees. They learn, grow, and react to the cultural elements which are inconsistent to one’s own personal or professional values. The multi-dimensional culture of organization has always increased work motivation of employee when they observe global outlook with diversified work force. These factors of organization turns any workplace an ever changing battle field and young employee consider them learning fields all the time. The industrialized and technology oriented developing society are more open. Here, openness refers to freedom of speech, open to innovation, free to near idea, and open communication among peer to peer, supervisor to subordinate and management to employees. 

The values cost something and they have purpose to achieve in organization meaningless values are disastrous in nature, because every value has cost to be paid by organization. For example, accountability as a value to be strictly followed is ensured through some processes, and procedure. Such process and procedure have financial and non –financial cost to be incurred. Eventually accountability as a value as or must have some purpose to achieve. Such purpose is required to support main vision of organizations otherwise, it is presence of value will never effect on organization and employee shall consider written value of no significance which as a result shall portrait weak picture of organizational setup at all.   

The work values in any form of organization require corporation among policies, procedures, and strategic plan. For example, if any organization value integrity and ethics as key value, it must be reflected in tis policies, procedures, and practices. The operations and business activities of form must depicts the ethical and integrity aspect of organization. The initial induction of employees in organization is the check point and inclusion of standard values being followed in company.
               

In the modern world, there are good number of organization who either have developed work values or they operate in more contingent nature. The major reason behind such situation is unawareness or unfamiliarity of leaders and key stakeholder including employee. The organizational values are easy to write down but hard to live up. The ever changing business nature have dramatic impact of organizational and culture. The values lead to actions, therefore they must be well defined and aligned to organization vision. The employee who perceive values aligned are more motivated and committed to their role. The leaders in general and stakeholders especially employees in particular are key actors to understand, and develop work values to encourage commitment and dedications. The follow up of implementation in true letter and spirit is another ongoing responsibility of management in form. They need to comprehend the correlation of work values and motivation among employee and practicality of values in work place environment has been another initial responsibility to keep work force, committed, dedicated and motivated.

      Thanks for valuable comments.

      Indeed, modern HR Practitioners are importantly, focusing on development of organizational culture based on value fit to organization's vision and mission. However, other social and cultural values of society at large have primarily been parallel counter when it comes to cultural in general.
